Assignment Two (2009-2010)

  • Task
You need to form a team of 3 members to do a Web Design project. This year's project theme is re-engineering school websites. Your team will
1) Identify a Hong Kong school website that has room for improvement regarding its website design, information presentation, site navigation, usability and accessibility.
2) Identify and explain the problem areas of the website.
3) Make suggestions and proposal about how to fix the problems and improve the website.
4) Build a website prototype to demonstrate how your proposal and suggestions work.
  • Submission
You need to present your works in class for assessment and sharing purpose. You also need to deploy your website prototype and make it accessible to all peer students.
Make your website accessible no later than 28 March 2010 23:59. Steven can provide a Web server to host your submitted website.
  • Assessment
The maximum point you can gain from this assignment is 15 points.
Problem identification: 5 points

  • Activity Two - Organizing your information
1. Make a detailed listing of basic information about all the content that exists in a school website to be redesigned. (Content Inventories)
Web content inventories of existing sites commonly take the form of a spreadsheet file with multiple worksheets, containing long listings of every page in the site, along with such essential characteristics as the page title, url, people responsible for the content, and so on.
2. Organize the identified website content into a number of groups and suggest appropriate labelling
3. As a result, submit your content inventories with the following details
      a) Page Group (suggest an appropriate labelling)
      b) Page title
      c) People responsible for the content
      d) Target audience
      e) Amount/nature of content
      f) Importance of the content
  • Activity Three - Site Structure
1. Design the most appropriate information architecture so that you have a clear information structure for the user to move freely and confidently through your site.
