Overview: This tutorial gives you some exercises on Website marketing and promotion.


Activity 1: Find out your competitors

Suppose you are the owner of a pet shop in Hong Kong, and you want to launch a website of your shop.
  • Q1) Do some web searches and find any five websites of your competitors.
  • Q2) Comment on the domain names of the websites you have found in Q1.

Activity 2: Link popularity check

  • Check the link popularity of your competitors' websites
  • With Yahoo! search engine, go to SiteExplorer to check the link popularity.
  • Q3) For each of your competitors' websites, list the numbers of inlinks according to Yahoo!
  • With Alexa, type http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/yoursite.com; replace yoursite.com with the website you want to check.
  • Q4) Which site has the most incoming links? Comment on your findings.

Activity 3: Submit URL to search engines

  • Suppose that you want to submit your website to some search engines.
  • Q5) Find the webpage that can let you submit your webpage to Google.
  • Q6) Find the webpage that can let you submit your webpage to Yahoo.
  • Q7) Find the webpage that can let you submit your webpage to Baidu.
  • Q8) Find the webpage that can let you submit your webpage to Bing.
  • Q9) Specify which one requires you to sign in before submitting.

Activity 4: Identify Keywords

  • Compile a list of keywords and phrases for your website.
  • You can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to find similar and related keywords.
  • You can also check the keywords of your competitors' website.
    With Alexa, type http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/yoursite.com
  • Q10) Finalize 10 keywords/key-phrases you would use for your website.
